This was a good win.
However I am sitting here, writing this and experiencing feelings of bitter-sweet. Sure, it was a win. Sure, the strat we planned out and used worked and we seem to be suited to it. Sure, it was fun. But, this is a new clan that obviously did not have huge amounts of experience with TF2. I know some will put this down to the fact we later got smashed on the same map, under the same settings, against a slightly more experienced team. But, we should be aiming to push ourselves up to a higher level rather than just taking on small frys. Most of our players consider themselves and indeed are quite good players. We even work quite well as a team after careful consideration of roles and what-not. But, I am still dragged back to the loss of morale and shock even, when things get tough against stronger opponents.
Anyway, back to the good. I liked how on our defense we actually dropped back. D1 was very lucky. I managed to get out the window and be the sole survivor of cap one and along with Thunders pre-placed sentry took out the three that came rushing onto the point. Where after we were quite unlucky not to lock them out on D1 completely.
Similarly on D2 we put up a decent defense on the first cap. But a hasty retreat by I think it was Hugh or maybe hero, allowed an early defense of the second cap, which we held till the clock ran down. Hugh and thunder teamed up with nightstalker to hold the cap as a last line of defense while psycho, burnt, hero, valium and I sought to hold the crucial chokes out the front of the balcony. Although the grate wasn't as locked down as I would of liked, this was a strong defense and I knew deep down nothing was getting through.
D1 offense was a similar story, although our uber rush still isn't perfected the first cap fell quickly. Then after a small struggle the second cap was also taken. What I am fast beginning to understand is if we go 4,3,1 with our class formation we are giving up an extra lot of damage for more endurance, with more healing and an extra uber. This means to get our damage up to a level where it can breach the seal of a defense we either need to catch them off guard (quick rush after first cap), or push in a large group with well stored/timed ubers, this is definitely something I will be thinking about improving. Also I will be thinking about more specific roles that are more comprehensive than merely initial pushes followed by a lot of yelling and just general frustration.
As far as MotM goes... All involved played a strong game. Whether it be thunder and nightstalkers patience on defense, Boner clearing and unexpected offense, or Hughs great last line on the cap.
A first Honorable mention goes to Valium who played a great medic game for his second or third match, well done buddy.
But, I think this one has to go with the numbers and go to Hero. Only just outscored by a very well played medic effort from valium, I saw wonderful work on defense where combination attacks from the front ledge, left the enemies running back to where ever they came from or leaving in body bags. Then to be followed up with a well played out crucial role on offense, often either being the first man out into the fray or taking a heavily guarded route alone. Congrats and well done.
